Ah NYSC! This period of compulsory service to the nation by Nigerian graduates is commonly considered by many to be a year long waste of time. The thought of 2 weeks spent being bundled around by all too eager soldiers in camp while wearing ill fitting uniforms followed by months spent being employed in mostly undesirable positions for little pay has a lot of graduates being less “Yay” and more:
But despite the above, there are actually many ways to make the service time count a great deal. Ways that if applied will likely have you looking back at the year long service with fondness. We are Viva Naija and here are 5 ways to make the most out of your NYSC
1) Join the Orientation Broadcasting Service:
The OBS is a great way to use your time effectively during the 2 week orientation time in camp. Working in the OBS will give you opportunity to meet key officers in camp and will sharpen your media and broadcasting skills. Fun story: During my service time, the OBS had very little music to play and were regularly rehashing the same few songs over and over. I joined them with an IPod full of several hit songs and I am glad to say camp became a lot more jubilant after that. Yes I am carrying my shoulders up. Throughout the camp time I was often spotted looking like:
2) Run a small business:
More often than not, most graduates will be given teaching positions in their various places of deployment and this usually affords them a large amount of off time to do other things. One of which is run a side business. Unlike me that spent my time binge watching series, my immediate elder brother who was posted to Yobe started a small cake business. So successful was he at this that he eventually had no more need of the money my parents would send to him regularly. Be like my elder brother. Look for an opportunity (if any) and key in. Turn your NYSC days into days of:
3) Do an online course:
Service time can be one of great self development. Taking an online course is an excellent way of doing just that. You will end up learning new skills that will buffer up your resume and the flexible nature of these courses won’t keep you from meeting your job demands. What online courses are available? Well my dear reader:
The year long service time will place you in a new environment with all sorts of new people. Mixing, listening and learning from them will broaden your horizon and leave you with a richer perspective of our great nation. You’ll be surprised how many new things you’ll learn about Nigeria and connections you will make that just might serve you well in the future. It will also leave you with a lot of fun stories to tell:
5) Start applying for Jobs:
It is not too early to start applying for work. In fact the service time leaves you with a good opportunity to get ahead in the job search stakes. With time on your hands, you can take your time and plough through all the job sites and send your resume to as many as possible. There is some truth in early bird catching the worm after all
So that’s our list. Did we miss any out? What are the other ways to make the NYSC count? Tell us about it in the comments below. As always we are Viva Naija and we love you
