Adekunle Gold – My Life: when a song starts with a flurry of talking drums, bata, and aso oke, I know that I’m in for a good time. Indeed, the song My Life by Adekunle Gold is just what the doctor ordered after being overwhelmed in recent times by formulaic beats and studio-created talent.
Instead, this masterpiece heralds everything that is wonderful about the Yoruba beat. The drums, the percussions, the guitars, the strings – glorious!
The message is vital too: people need to let others live their lives. Don’t hate on me because God is blessing me! Pray for yourself! Increase your hustle!! Stop doing so-so jealousy!!!
But while the lyrics are important, I’m still stuck on the opening passage and the musical interlude in the middle. Just bliss!
Adekunle Gold will go far. He has stuck to his signature sounds and ethos, and he has excelled at it. Not to mention that the few women in the video are all melanin queens – this young man just makes me so happy.
And if you do not know what’ so special about an abeti aja – the traditional Yoruba cap as worn by Adekunle Gold in this video – now you know!
