My country continues to burn and bleed as more and more extreme groups see the unrest as an opportunity to carry out their dastardly acts while the Army carry out nervous, swift and bloody reactions to anybody that they feel might be a threat.

According to the Premium Times, the Nigerian Army have come into bloody conflict with a Shiite group known as the Islamic Movement of Nigeria. The Army claims that the religious sect attempted to assassinate Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, by laying in wait while he attended official engagement and pelting his vehicle with heavy stones and weapons.

Army spokesperson Sani Usman says “The troops responsible for the safety and security of the Chief of Army Staff on hearing explosion and firing were left with no choice than to defend him and the convoy at all cost as well as open up the barricaded road for law abiding citizens.”

The Shiites have vigorously refuted every claim of assassination attempts or unlawful behaviour, claiming that the Army descended on defenceless victims while being completely unprovoked.

Speaking about the retaliation that followed, Mr Usman released a statement which says: “This is in line with the Nigerian Army Rules of Engagement and Code of Conduct. This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated from any individual or groups and should not be allowed to repeat itself.”

The army said the sect carried out the attempt on Mr. Buratai’s life on the instructions of Ibrahim El-zakzaky, the leader of the Shiite group.

The Army attacked the Shiites at their place of worship and opened fire while many were gathered, unarmed, for a ceremony at their Husainiyyah base, to change the flag on the dome of the building to herald the beginning of the month of Rabiul /Auwal- the birth month of the Prophet of Islam, Prophet Muhammad. It is reported that their main place of worship has sustained heavy shelling and even burnt to the ground.

Twenty members of the group have been reported as dead, and the group leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, has been arrested following a siege at his Zaria residence.

While they are busy dragging who is to blame, tomorrow another wife will bury a husband, a mother will weep and wail a son who will never knock on her door again, and a family’s daily bread has been compromised.

Please. Stop. Killing.
