I just know every Black woman the length and breadth of the planet is excited about this news. There is no such things as enough variety when it comes to cosmetics for the darker skin shade, Lord knows we’re far behind our white counterparts, so MDMflow is a welcome addition to our makeup purses – even more so when it was created by an amazing young lady.
Cue Florence Adepoju, a 24 year old British-born Nigerian, who spent four years earning an applied chemistry degree in cosmetics and then set out to make lipsticks in colours she’d always dreamt of for skin tones similar to her own.
A Nigerian fixing Black concerns, you say? Viva Naija is here for this!
After being disappointed in shade after shade that could not work well with her skin tone without some sort of mixing or blending, Ms Adepoju launched MDMflow, handmade, rose-scented lipsticks in shades like juicy orange, emerald green and brilliant blue, sold in gold-colored aluminum bullet casings.
“It’s not Halloween makeup,” Ms. Adepoju says. “These are colors people can actually wear.”
She’s not wrong there. Milkshake, a blueish-pink named after the Kelis song that brings all the boys to the yard, is a bestseller and frequently sold out. So is a bright blue called Mas Marina.
MDMflow is named after the creator of the brand herself, Madame Flow being her nickname from as far back as she can remember.
The ambitious and talented Ms Adepoju has seen her range sold in Topshop Oxford Circus, Colette in Paris and the website Nasty Gal(where the lipsticks cost £13 each).
