Dbanj - It's not a lie

Dbanj – It’s Not a Lie: I heard the full video of this song came out within the hour that it dropped. Instantly, I opened it up on a browser…and then proceeded to procrastinate about listening to it for a full three days. That should have been my first warning that D’Banj, the Koko Master no longer held me in his magical spell.

I wrote on just about every trending article, but did not cover the song; the YouTube link remained unopened and un-listened to, the tab staring at me with recrimination.

Anyway, I listened to it this morning. It was okay. Just okay. I will say that Bangalee owes Harrysong a great deal for the mediocrity otherwise it would have been poorer still. The high-life Igbo beat, and Harrysong’s verse just about made the song bearable for me.

Wande Coal’s verse was forgettable, but I really think Dbanj’s verse at the beginning was probably the least captivating. And since this is a song that is meant to capture how great you are, it sets the pace for the entire piece.

The video? Not for me. It was a tick list of ‘frosh’ videos – caramel skinned, half-dressed girls, mansion in the middle of nowhere, men frolicking with aforementioned half-dressed girls, random displays of wealth. And then! Because the two featured artists were paying homage to D’banj, they wore his signature medallion. Very surreal. A sign of bought respect if ever I saw one.

Sadly, listening to the song, I didn’t get the air of “The Koko Master is back!” I didn’t walk away thinking “This is what the music scene has been missing!” And I sure don’t see this being a club banger, although the phrase “It’s Not A Lie” just my catch on.

Just my two cents though. What say you? Listen and watch below and tell us your thoughts on Dbanj – It’s Not a Lie:
