Led by a quite impressive John Mikel Obi, Nigeria claimed men’s football bronze at the Rio Olympics with an entertaining 3-2 win over Honduras in Belo Horizonte on Saturday to deny the Central Americans their first ever Olympic medal.

Two goals from Roma striker Sadiq Umar and namesake Aminu Umar’s fine finish early in the second-half put Nigeria 3-0 up.

Honduras battled until the end, though, as Anthony Lozano and Marcelo Pereira headed home in the final 20 minutes to set up a nervy finish for the 1996 gold medal winners.

Hosts Brazil are aiming for their first ever football gold medal in one of the most anticipated events of the Games against world champions Germany at Rio’s Maracana stadium.

  1. LoL… Not 23 medals please, it is just 1 medal, football is just one sport, for the fact that 23 players were given medals doesn’t equate it to 23 medals… Please visit Olympic medal chat on google

  2. Mikel God bless you more, siasia may you be lifted more, other team mates God will bless your football career. To sadiq umar that killed our game with Germany, have a rethink of your football career.you stop us from meeting with Brazil in the finals.

  3. The kidding started… Then real story followed suit. 23 bronze laurels = 1 gold for us as it seems. I commend the coaching crew, players, and the captain for he’s quality of leadership. Arriving late and without supports is never a deterrent to success. #dreamteamIV
