You know sometimes you hear about a new brand and all of a sudden you see them everywhere and wonder if you’ve been living under a rock the whole time? Well, that’s how I feel about Maze Couture at the moment.
Run by the enigmatic and completely charming Chimezie Okure, Maze Couture has dressed just about every Nigerian celebrity you may have heard of, and a few non-citizens besides. D’Banj, Fuse ODG, Basketmouth and Tuface are among the men who have come out handsomely bedecked in Maze Couture’s bespoke tailoring, and the women have not been left out either – with Naija Bite’s Mary Shittu and Nnenna Agba from Cycle Six of America’s Next Top Model leading the line of beautifully dressed Nigerian personalities who have had the pleasure of Maze’s tape measure.
Yesterday, 21st August, Chimezie flung his office doors wide open to the general public to come and see the sartorial beauties within. We got there rather early as we wanted to have a chat with this talented man to find out the man behind the stitches.
It’s fair to say that Maze had a complete professional turnaround – he was a practising civil engineer before he got into the field of design and tailoring.
Since his entry into the scene in 2010, he has gone from strength to strength, sourcing the best fabrics and imposing the most intricate designs upon them.A lot of his work might be termed Afro-Asian – he uses fabrics and patterns that have an Asian flair like raw silk and rich cotton and introduces the intricate needlework we are used to seeing on bubas and traditional blouses.
The man is involved in every stage of the process – from the designs to the fabric sourcing to the stitching and quality control. Every single garment is made right here in the UK, so you know you’re getting quality work!
While his work is strictly bespoke right now (this was evident when a client tried on a suit – fitted him like a glove!), Maze’s dream is to have some of his work carried by the larger department shops like Selfridges and the like.
Given what I saw yesterday, I feel his dream will happen in the not-too-distant future, so I hurried up and got myself measured before he became a big boy and doesn’t know us any more!
The long male shirts start from £100, the skirts fro £80, and the dresses from £75. Touching the fabric, you can just tell they’re high-end and durable, not your cheapo stuff. They really beautiful!
