The Fleet Commander, Western Naval Command, Apapa, Lagos State, Rear Admiral Daniel Ikoli, has allegedly shot himself dead in his residence in the Apapa area. It was learnt that a service pistol, expended and live ammunition, were recovered at the scene by police detectives who visited the residence.

This claim that he shot himself is being substantiated only by his house boy, who lives with him alone, as his wife stays in Abuja, while his children are schooling abroad. A police investigation commissioned by the Western Naval Command has already commenced to clear grey arrears surrounding this death, declaring that the cause of Ikoli’s death “had yet to be known”.

Around 5am on Wednesday, the house boy reportedly heard a gunshot from his room. On getting to the spot, he found him dead and raised the alarm.

He allegedly left his office early the previous day on grounds that he was ill. And, a source close to Okoli disclosed that, while Okoli was very lively and intelligent on his day, he had been managing depression and an ailment for some time, adding that it was not impossible that he committed suicide.

Well, be it murder or suicide, Viva Naija sympathises with Nigerian Navy and Okoli’s family on this huge loss. His kids and wife must be super devastated, as the shock of sudden loss can’t be contained. If this is found to be another case of suicide, adding to the growing number of late, then, we think it’s high time we declared a state of emergency in Nigeria’s psychiatry and psychology structure, especially  touching depression management, as it could affect anyone at any age.
