The plight of the perpetually oppressed Nigerian girl child: Katsina leaders support 15-year-old kidnapped girl’s marriage

Katsina governor attorney general tender letter supporting 15-year-old kidnapped girls marriage

The Nigerian girl child really should be protected by WHO or UNICEF or something. She is a creature more threatened than any other you can think of. Threatened by oppression, patriarchy, fear and good old-fashioned sexual perversion.

We engaged for decades in Female Genital Mutilation. It is not just the slicing off of the clitoris that is horrific. It is the thought behind it: heaven forbid a female experiences pleasure. You want to inhibit promiscuity, and yet some men will literally sex anything given the chance.

We will educate a boy child and let a girl child fester in ignorance. And even after we convinced Nigerians of the many valid reasons to educate girls, we still thwart their academic progress. “Just get enough learning to be educated. but not to lord it over your husband o! You must submit your intellectual prowess to that most mighty of things – The Penis!”

And now, the cherry in our dung-infested, fetid crown: Child Bride. Oh yes, we will break or impose whatever laws to in order to secure a pre-pubescent bride. We will invoke culture, religion, civilisation or lack thereof; whatever it takes to feel right about putting pensioner penis into barely-formed girls. And  then, not satisfied with arranged marriages between the antiquated appendage and the parent of the helpless child, they have now resorted ot kidnapping.

First, it was Ese Oruru. This girl’s mother was prepared to go to the ends of the Earth to get her daughter back and it is only for this reason that we have Ese safe and sound today, albeit with child. In that story too, there was a local leader who tried his utmost to block the parent from seeing her child. Their rationale? If the child was already living with Yinusa the abductor, then the parents should forget about it. Much as one might forget about an old pair of shoes or a half-eaten sandwich.

We Are Cursed And There Is No Antidote

History repeats itself as another perverse he-goat has kidnapped another Nigerian girl child. Back in August of 2016, Jemilu Lawal of Katsina State kidnapped 15-year-old Christian girl Habiba Ishiaku with the sole purpose of converting her to Islam and marrying her. Her father, Tanko Ishiaku, has kicked up a fuss demanding that his daughter be returned to him as she is a minor.

This is already preposterous enough until you hear the defendants in the case: Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari, the state Attorney General, the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumin Kabir Usman, the state Commissioner of Police and Jemilu Lawal (Habiba’s husband).

Yup, you read that right. The state’s leaders are all behind the abduction of a young girl from her parents. An unsigned letter from the teenager has also mysteriously appeared, as well as a typed, signed letter from the Attorney General.

This platform was only ever meant for celebrating Nigerians. But today, we should hang our heads in shame.

For shame, Nigeria. For shame.
