Our best and worst dressed – #AMVCA2017!

10

It’s that time of the year again, the Nigerian Oscars! I’m sure the nominees for the African Magic Viewers Choice Awards cared about the categories and the gongs, but we were just here for the outfits! The #AMVCA2017 took place yesterday and we saw the good, the bad, and the downright horrendous, and we loved every minute of it!

Personally, I would have loved to have seen more traditional outfits, and in that regard, the men won hands down. I don’t think I saw any lady in traditional wear, except maybe Uche Jombo in akpoche, but that was about it.

1We’re loving this outfit by Chioma Akpotha!

One of our favourites at the event, Chioma Akpotha wearing the hell out of this outfit by Shakara Couture Nigeria.

2The Queen of Hearts – Toni Tones

Toni Tones point blank stole our hearts with this purple creation by Yemi Shoyemi

3Golden dreams by Nana Akua Addo

The only thing that glows more than this resplendent dress by Leo Almodal is Nana’s amazing skin. This ebony goddess right here!! ???

4Somkele slaying in purple!!

Purple, gold and black were the winning colours last night and Somkele took slaying to new heights in this asymmetrical piece by Andrea Iyama. And this slit, Jesus! This eye-watering slit!

5Rita Dominic – killin’ ’em DEAD!

Rita Dominic, queen slayer, perennial diva, winner of awards and all-round MVP! When this lady showed up in the green last year, she was possibly the best dressed woman in the house. This year, she came out with a similar but more lethal style and kuku shut the whole show down. Pree her slayage by Lanre Dasilva Ajayi here:

6Our wife, Adesua Etomi!!!

This lady can do no wrong in the fashion stakes. Adesua Etomi has been slaying without reprieve for a couple years now, but this dress by Mai Atafo is simply superior. Get into this strapped up back!

7Nancy Isime – a WIN WIN WIN for us!

So we’ve heard some comments about this outfit, stating that it isn’t decent or not formal enough for the #AMVCA2017. Let me say: I don’t know what y’all are talking about! I swear Nancy Isime is KILLING with this ensemble by TIR Fashion House. The ultra short dress is offset perfectly by the ankle length coat. And the platinum buzz cut? Chisox! Hawt like fayah!!

8Ini Dima-Okojie – slayer of them all!

I have no idea if this lady does something other than slaying like the queen she is, but she manages to do this 24/7! Ini Dima-Okojie looks positively flawless in this creation by Fab Lane by Derin.

9Jenifa of Laive rocking the gold

Funke Akindele Bello glittered and shone on the red carpet! But our favourite part? The way her husband catered to her and let her have her moment in the spotlight. Dress by Ayo Van Elmar.

10The ageless beauty that is Faithia Balogun!

I am always enamoured by how fashion conscious this lady is. She’s rocked cropped hair, gothic looks and even androgynous ensembles like this one styled by Yolanda Okereke. And what’s more, she must be a vampire or something, she looks positively ageless! Yum!

11The luscious Mercy Johnson Okojie

Just negodu the talented Mercy Johnson snatched to the nth degree! Giving life and pulled together by Moash Styling, the fitted, black bodice and flared skirt by House of Jahdara does wonders for her hourglass figure. Mama Purity for the win!!

12Simply bad belle for our simple but sultry Simi

Another person who got some bad rep for her outfit is Simi aka our wife (Falz’s wife is our wife jare!). But for us, we think it was a good choice for the diminutive singer. She wouldn’t look good drowned in fabric, and the short length fits her form. Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the bottom part of the dress aso oke? If so, we’re totally here for it. Get ’em, Simi! You rock!

13Our national treasures, Olu Jacobs and Joke Silva

It’s not enough that the love these two show to each other give us serious couple goals, they also do it while looking flawless. For the #AMVCA2017, Olu Jacobs is the height of paternal dapperness in his plum coloured agbada and Joke Silva’s dress by Lanre Dasilva Ajayi  is so so beautiful!

14Mabel Makun is angelic…with a twist

Who knew the colour white could look so angelic and so flirty at the same time? Mabel Makun (aka Mrs AY the Comedian) wears it well with toned legs that won’t quit. The frothy, flirty outfit is made by Elegante Designs by Tiannah Styling.

15Wofai shines brighter than the sun!

16

This dress is blinding but the lady wearing it glitters even more. Wofai Fada pulls off this off-shoulder number with ease and sex-appeal. She looks almost too good to be true!

17The Gentlemen of the #AMVCA2017

The men impressed me though, I can’t lie. Be it in dapper suits or traditional garb, the men put their best feet forward and came to conquer. Awesome stuff ❤

Peep IK Ogbonna, Alexx Ekubo and Bovi making our hearts flutter in black tie ensembles!

18Kalu Ikeagwu gives traditional wear a royal touch

There’s something princely about a man in a traditional wear. It makes him stand straighter, stand taller, and the outfit brings an aura with it. Few do it as well as Kalu Ikeagwu did it last night, matching this outfit by Vanskere down to the coral bead bracelet.

19Timi Dakolo gives us our medicine

Our Ijaw bae Timi Dakolo keeps serving heat with his traditional attires and this one is no different. The chain detail is a winner for us too.

20Daniel K. Daniel makes this look good

At first we thought this ensemble looked a little “Joseph and his coat of many colours” but Daniel K. Daniel’s outfit grew on us as the night went by.

21Uti Nwachukwu the dapper don

I almost always prefer Uti in trad; he favours loud and proud colours in suits – a tad too bold for my conservative tastes – but this periwinkle blue suit by Emmy Kasbit is a win for us.

22The Meh Outfits

There were a few outfits that were nice but didn’t make us lose our breaths and some we didn’t quite know what to make of them.

Like Eniola Badmus‘ dress by Elegante Designs by Tiannah StylingThe colour is fabulous, the embroidery detailing makes a statement, but the cape? Maka why? It makes her look unnecessarily wide. Making it look as though it is difficult to clothe a big gal. The dress was very nearly there.

23Toyin Aimakhu in beige

This dress should tick all the boxes, but I can’t imagine what it is about it that leaves me underwhelmed. I’ve seen Toyin Aimakhu look a thousand times better and to be fair, she’s wearing the hell out of this dress with her tiny waist. Perhaps it’s the colour? Oyinbo nude is not my favourite colour on black skin. Or maybe the lace fabric? Whatever the problem, the #AMVCA2017 dress didn’t do it for us.

24Oge Okoye is carrying shoulders up!

I don’t even know how I feel. There is nothing wrong with the dress by House Of Luminee that  Oge Okoye chose per se, but the Voltron-like shoulder pads? And the ice skater nude insert? The 80s sequinned look? And the indeterminate length? Just not quite right to me.

25Olajumoke Orisaguna’s outfit

Here are two of the comments I read about Olajumoke’s outfit by Jordan Smith:

  1. Why is her hair stacked up like that? This is what happens when you are used to carrying load on your head.
  2. Na wa for d TAILOR dat made her outfit…because dis one no be designer anything.

I’ll just leave that there.

26Ugh. And the downright unthinkable

There are just some travesties that should not happen, and even as I write this, my heart is breaking because first up is a long-time boo of mine, my favourite silver fox, Richard Mofe-Damijo. He was looking so good, sooooo good! The suit by Taryor Gabriels is resplendent and shows us the RMD we’ve come to love and salivate over. But sneakers to the #AMVCA2017? Daddy, why evuls? I get that it’s on trend and might not look out of place on Pharrell Williams or Future, but on our sleek papi? No!

27Eku Edewor in plantation chic

Eku Edewor must have been watching Beyonce’s Formation one too many times; she took the whole Alabama plantation look a tad far. The trousers conspired against her to create a permanent camel toe in every single picture I saw. And a parasol indoors? Chile…

28Uche Jombo rocking that akpoche

I’ve heard this velvet/velour fabric is back in vogue but it will only ever be akpoche (Igbo upholstery fabric) to me. There were just too many strips hanging off this dress and too many features. Off-shoulder, thigh length slit, Cruella de-Ville type train…it’s all just too much. Sorry, Uche Jombo. We still luuurve you though; one of our favourite actors EVER!

29Kunle Remi tied bedsheet to the #AMVCA2017. We are not understanding

And somewhere there is a Mama Put lady feverishly searching for her table cover. To you guys who are fashion-conscious, what is the name of this style please? What is Kunle Remi wearing?

30And then there were Dem Boyz

I get that one must make a statement at the AMVCAs, especially when you’re lesser known, but why did these young men do this? Why?

31And then there was gangsta papi

I think the less said about this, the better. The bandana, the too-tight trousers, the horrific blazer and oversized pocket handkerchief and the half-shoes? Nope. All the nopes.

32And then there was Sika

Sika ‘Ife’ Osei is usually so beautifully turned out, and Weiz Dhurm Franklyn who created her dress her usually faultless, but this dress was a no-no. Organza? Why? The cut did nothing for her bust and the swathes of fabric at the bottom left her looking shapeless. She’s stunningly beautiful, but this dress wasn’t the one at all.
