Julius Agwu – the force behind the Crack Ya Ribs movement is in town and took a moment to sit down with press to talk about the passion for entertainment that has kept him going all this time, and the visions and plans for the future.
Let me start by saying that Julius Agwu is a remarkable man. He has endured health issues, invasive surgery, ongoing medical tests, and the financial constraints of putting together such a show, and he has just kept soldiering on.
He was seated at the Press Conference at 2pm on the dot, even though we didn’t kick off till 3pm. He spoke eloquently and with great fire about his passion for Crack Ya Ribs: ” The motivation is to lift comedians into the spotlight and also to give people a thing of beauty which is art”.
He has certainly sacrificed a lot for this motivation – most of the projects are self-funded; the cost of venues, flights, hotels and administrative details means that there is little profit to go round, and indeed he has come away short more than once.
But when a show can boast of bringing names like Plantashun Boyz, I Go Die, Akporhorho, Patoranking, and hundreds more to the Nigerian masses, you can sense his satisfaction at what he does.
Julius D’Genius Agwu says “Entertainment has reshaped people’s perceptions of Nigeria and Nigerians” and he is not wrong. Our music chart worldwide, our parties are legendary, and now our comedies are filling halls even outside of Nigeria.
Riding on the wave of this revolution, Julius is not a man to rest on his laurels. His production house is working on a TV series that will be titled ‘The Vendor’ and it sounds like it will be classic Agwu – being the voice of the voiceless, comedy that tackles society’s ills.
For now, let me say that Sunday is looking like it will be a show befitting ten years of fun and laughter from the Crack Ya Ribs powerhouse.
Performers will be:
Alibaba, Okey Bakassi, SeyiBrown, I Go Dye, AY, Aphrican Ape, Oyinbo Princess and Hackney’s very own (Prince) Kojo.
Music by Korede (Godwin Crooner).
Plus other guest artists.
