There are a few African countries that have predominantly fairer skinned inhabitants, but largely, one would think that the Dark Continent would be synonymous with dark skin, but the increase in bleaching and #TeamLieSkin means that purists such as myself are constantly on the hunt for anything that elevates or celebrates black skin. So I was tickled
pink brown when I heard this song: Melanin by Sauti Sol featuring Patoranking. It is to be a part of the Kenyan’s upcoming LP titled #AfrikanSauce, a continuation of the Live and Die in Afrika album. He is working with artistes from around the continent and will be dropping a collabo every month for the next year.
Okay, so the lyrics are hardly the stuff of Shakespeare’s sonnets, but then again, neither is the stuff that Rihanna puts out, even armed with a dozen writers. People listen to music for the beat and the way it makes them feel; a form of escapism, if you will. This song hits high notes on both features: the hook is catchy, the sinewy strands and the boom base make you just want to wind.
I was here for the song just from the title; I think #AfrikanSauce is something that should be celebrated and sung about!
But as the beat is buns and Patoranking finished work with his throaty timbre, this is definitely a song I can endorse!
