As Nigerian as jollof rice, social media savagery and aso ebi, we celebrate national icon and superstar King Sunny Ade today on his birthday! Please, if you do not know at least one King Sunny Ade song, how are you even Nigerian?? If you grew up in a Yoruba household (or just about any Yoruba city or town) in the 70s and 80s, you would definitely have seen your older male relatives with the prerequisite afro, flared trousers and platform shoes.
And nobody wore this better, looked more dapper, or carried this with more swag than our very own king of Juju music, lord of the talking drum, and master of faaji – King Sunny Ade.
He is a year older today, and the little girl in me who used to peek between the banisters at my mum and other elegant grown-ups in their gele and attire as they danced the night away, would like to wish him a HAPPY BIRTHDAY and to say thank you for the music, the memories, and the happy flashbacks.
These are a few lines from one of my favourite tracks – Komi Komi from the ‘Let Them Say’ album:
Iru ijo wo la o jo ri?
Ai mo’ye bi synchro system
Bi synchro feelings
Alujo iyen o ni ye
Omode a tadi reke
Awon agba agba a so di wuke
Ti won ba n gbo ‘lu Sunny Alade!!
But if you’d like to ‘tadi reke’ to the entire album, click on the link below and enjoy your Tuesday o jare!
