Beninese icon Angélique Kidjo won Best Global Music Album for her album Mother Nature against heavyweights such as Made In Lagos (Deluxe) by Wizkid, Legacy + by Femi & Made Kuti, and Voice Of Bunbon, Vol. 1 by Rocky Dawuni.
I haven’t listened to the whole album but a few tracks have shown that the win is well-deserved. Her deep understanding of language, lyric, rhythm and flow shows exactly why this force has stood strong in African music for four decades. The brilliance is in the nuance and the harmony while maintaining persistent Beninoise beats.
Now, I am mostly proud of my people when it comes to the music scene. We are doing great things with advancing Afrobeats and getting the world to move. Peru? Para! We are dominating in countries we didn’t even know would one day here about us and our love for gbedu.
But sometimes, Nigerians like to embarrass me with their Poco Lee and Portable behaviour, going online to drag an icon because their fave (Wizzy Baba) didn’t win.
These ment victims really went on Ms. Kidjo’s social media to type horrid things. Statements that make it clearer everyday that we should maybe implement mandatory tests before giving people access to social media. You can be disappointed in the loss but hurling insults at Angélique Kidjo is childish; especially in light of the fact that there are millions of people who appreciate her music and constantly attend her sell-out concerts. The world is bigger than your faves.
As usual, Wizkid has said nothing to curtail the behaviour of his overzealous fans. Some see this as a form of complicity, others say he never comments on scandal anyway. It wouldn’t kill him to congratulate the winner and maybe defuse the situation, but I also understand that that might be too much to ask.
Being a sore loser is not a good look. Burna Boy went on a rant when he didn’t win a Grammy the first time, but did a tour of international interviews and appearances when he finally won. Nigerians shut down Twitter following that Grammy win. Today, it is a nonsensical award presided over by ancient White men who do not understand African music or taste.
Angélique Kidjo won this, and congratulations to her. Anyone who doesn’t like it can go and start their own awards show and let us hear word. Oh. Wait. We already have the Headies. Lol.
