Youth Corp members have been highly expectant, following President Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration on Tuesday that the approved N30,000 new minimum wage would be paid to workers earning below the new minimum wage. But it didn’t take long for their expectations to be crushed.
The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, on Wednesday debunked information that corps members would start receiving the N30,000 new minimum wage as their monthly allowance from July.
Brig. Gen. Ibrahim said that the NYSC management was yet to receive any directive from the government concerning minimum wage or increment in corp members’ allowance.
“When there is an increment and we have been notified, we will communicate the heart-warming decision to our corps members through appropriate channels.
“And certainly, the management will make sure that our corps members are paid according to the new increment,” he said.
The NYSC boss also urged the general public to disregard the fake Twitter posts bearing his identity.
How heart-breaking for corpers. Thoughts of receiving alawee of N30,000 must have been running through their minds, now this. However, all hope is not lost, as talks of allowance increment has been ongoing for a while. An increment just might be imminent.
