SNAPCHAT shares plummet after Rihanna claps against domestic violence shaming

You see all these social media platforms ehn? They will be alright las las. Yes, the world has changed. They’ve taken the place of newspapers and mainstream media in governing the zeitgeist. But sometimes, the power gets to their heads. And while there are many mere mortals who can only rant and rail at some of the unfair rules and algorithms, every once in a while, they come across a juggernaut who will not stand for their nonsense. Today’s class is titled: How Rihanna Schooled SNAPCHAT and Called Them on Their Nonsense. Are you sitting comfortably? We shall begin.

A SNAPCHAT game app (Would You Rather), made the singer the subject of an advert on the platform which asked users if they would “rather slap Rihanna or punch Chris Brown“.

Most people caught the reference – Chris Brown’s conviction for assaulting Rihanna in 2009 while they were dating.

Snap Inc says the ad “never should have appeared on our service”, with a spokesperson saying: “This advertisement is disgusting and never should have appeared on our service. We are so sorry we made the terrible mistake of allowing it through our review process.

“We are investigating how that happened so that we can make sure it never happens again.”

Unfortunately, Rihanna ain’t the one and has never been. She’s accused SNAPCHAT of deliberately trying to shame domestic violence victims, saying she was “trying to figure out what the point was with this mess! I’d love to call it ignorance, but I know you ain’t that dumb!”

Tell ’em, Riri! Oh, they gon’ learn!

Her Snap story was articulate and infused with rage, ending in letting SNAPCHAT know that she did not accept their apology.

I’m not even remotely sorry. I’ve never even opened SNAPCHAT one day, so their shares value is no skin off my nose, but I do know good and hell well that the owners of these platforms are constantly tweaking their algorithms, unnecessarily punitive on content they do not want to see, and “accidentally” letting through content that they think will influence trends or start a conversation. I’m waiting for the day Mark Zuckerberg will get his just desserts as Facebook is the biggest twister out on these streets.

I’m proud Rihanna didn’t let this slide. Sooner or later, these “giants” are gonna have to learn to keep certain names out they mouths. Till then, pele SNAPCHAT. I wish you a speedy recovery. Or not, what’s my own?
