The long-awaited Samsung Galaxy S8 is out and looks like it’s going to be excellent! There are two versions to the phone – the standard Galaxy S8 with a 5.8-inch screen and the larger S8 Plus with a 6.2-inch screen. Both have what Samsung is calling the “infinity display” – the screen extends from top to bottom, making and curves around the edges, making it look as though it has no bezels at all.

A lot of the features of the phone have been leaked online and Samsung themselves have given us a sneak preview with their TV adverts, but it would seem holding the phone is still a welcome feeling. The design is sleek and light, the all-over screen giving a further feel of sophistication.

In terms of functions, the Samsung Galaxy S8 holds its own and then some. Waterproof as standard, USB-C and audio jack input, finger print recognition AND the very first phone to have Bluetooth 5.0. How is all this powered, you might ask? Samsung has kept the lessons learnt from the Note foremost in their minds and have not pushed for a massive battery this time. This might mean the phone needing a full recharge at least once a day, but the company is compensating with Qualcomm Quick Charge so hopefully, this shouldn’t prove too much of a problem.

Dem Selfies Tho!

The camera! The camera! There is no doubt that Samsung has lagged behind Apple and even HTC when it comes to their picture quality. They just never seem to invest in powerful camera technology. What’s interesting is once again, they have not pushed the envelope here. The S8 uses the same rear camera as the Galaxy S7; a 12-megapixel sensor with OIS although Samsung says it’s done work on the software side to improve picture quality. The selfie camera is an 8-megapixel sensor now, but more importantly it has autofocus.

Conclusion

All in all, an excellent phone and without doubt top of the android line. While Samsung have never even so much as hinted out loud that they are in direct competition with Apple, at the South Korean launch of the Samsung Galaxy S8, DJ Koh, the company’s vice president of product strategy said “We have a dream to overcome Apple.” The truth is that if you are an android believer (like me), there never was any competition. Yes, Samsung lovers mutter about picture quality and battery life from time to time, but we’re generally very happy with our lot. We will not be crossing over to the dark side any time soon. And will certainly be looking to get the S8 as soon as possible!
