A dark cloud as passed over the Itsekiri Kingdom today as one of her leading figures and historians has passed. Pa JOS Ayomike finally rested in a Warri private hospital at about 9pm on Wednesday, 4th October, 2017. He was aged 90 on April 7th, 2017.
Pa Johnson Oritsegbubemi Sunday Ayomike will certainly be missed but never forgotten as he was prolific in his writing. He has left work that will stand the test of time; work that means every man, woman or child of Itsekiri heritage will know of their heritage. A life well lived indeed.
He was a great historian, excellent writer and community leader, and up to the time of his death, was the Chairman of Itsekiri Leaders of Thought (ILOT).
Condolences have been pouring in, including a message from Governor Okowa of Delta State. Yes, he is a well loved man in that state, but to me, he will always be simply – Uncle JOS.
He’s my great uncle – and it is my maternal grandmother Mrs M.O. Kpiasi who sits between Uncle Jos Ayomike and his wife in the picture shown. It is because of distinguished beacons such as him that my pride in my heritage knows no bounds.
You have done us proud, sir, and I am proud to have known and been related to you. All of the greatness that this new generation has is because of your commitment and sacrifice to our history; all of our faults are ours.
Rest on with the ancestors, sir.
