It is always the test of human strength, perseverance and commitment to push the human body to its utmost. This is possibly why 50 athletes took part in the Antarctic Ice Marathon a fortnight ago. Personally, I don’t like to be cold. And I particularly dislike being that far away from a Nigerian market because egusi and goat meat. But I guess if you are a serious athlete and you’ve run on just about every terrain going, it is natural to try your hand (and mind!) at something that truly tests you. This certainly seems like what the Antarctic Ice Marathon proves – mental mettle.
The runners will brave formidable and genuine Antarctic weather conditions. They will contend with underfoot conditions comprising snow and ice throughout, an average windchill temperature of -20C, and the possibility of strong Katabatic winds. Furthermore, the event takes place at an altitude of 700 metres; enough to cause a mind altering states!
