Funke Akindele-Bello has just released the official trailer for her directorial debut, ‘Your Excellency’, and I have to say, it looks pretty interesting!
The trailer was released on Friday, November 8, 2019, on YouTube and already has over 2,000 views. Maybe not stellar, but certainly not to be sniffed at either. The film is scheduled for a December 2019 release
A brief synopsis of Your Excellency: Nigeria is thrown into a social media frenzy when a wealthy billionaire but a most unlikely candidate ever decides to run for president. His unexpected rise intrigues the public, as they begin to believe it is possible for an outsider to aspire to the highest public office. As the story reaches its climax, you begin to believe that anything and everything can happen if you capture the imagination of a nation through the power of social media.
Directed by Nollywood’s queen of comedy, Funke Akindele-Bello, the movie is funny and touching in equal measure, as it shows the importance, love and loyalty play in facing life’s challenges.
Now that she’s moved on to greener pastures, I guess I can now safely say that I never cared for the Jenifa character and never watched a single episode of the series from start to finish. I found it rather simplistic and one-dimensional – the constant mismatching of grammar and tenses used to hurt my ears. I found it overacted but could never voice it out for fear of having my green pali revoked – she is such a national treasure. I forgave her when I watched an interview in which she voiced the same concerns: she been ready to move on from the Jenifa character but she can’t put a foot outside her home without someone shouting “Do Jenifa!” at her.
So, I, for one, am pleased that she got the opportunity to expand her acting range while also dipping her toe in the directing waters. If the trailer is anything to go by, this one looks promising and looks like it will be genuinely funny too. Certainly, the cast is solid: Akin Lewis is at his comedic best, Shaffy Bello can do no wrong in my eyes, and Deyemi Okanlawon is on hand to represent the younger generation of politicians. Falz is a pant as usual, but he’s my pant.
This is looking really promising! Let’s wait and see!
The film also features Kemi ‘Lala’ Akindoju, Osas Ighodaro, Kunle Coker, Eku Edewor, Emmanuel ‘EmmaOMG’ Edunjobi, Alexx Ekubo, Oreka Godis, Mike Iheuwa, Aletile ‘Seyi Law’ Lawrence, Bimbo Manuel, Ini Dima-Okojie, Chioma ‘Chigul’ Omeruah, Ikechukwu Onunaku, Helen Paul and Toni Tones.
