First Fada Fada, now Augment – has Phyno found a winning streak in Igbo gospel?

I know the saying goes: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, but I think there’s also a lot to be said for innovation. The video for Phyno’s Augment is out and it’s just…well, it’s Fada Fada with different lyrics. Even the video is reminiscent of his previous blockbuster – anyone ese remember rooftop shots, his goons doing Igbo dance all around him, and a plethora of Igbo dancers?

Augment is Igbo gospel done to exceptional standards. It’s staying humble and thanking God for blessings and the right crew. It’s Igbo dancers infused with church choristers. Not a single ukwu or brezz to be seen for miles around. Even Olamide, who only just released Wo! which day here, is talking about Jesus power. Because “Chineke, you too much!”

It is awesome; it will sell. Because it is a musical representation of Nigeria today: getcho money any which way you can, boo boo, but don’t forget to thank God at the end of it.

Also, it does what Olamide, Phyno and the rest of the crew are known for: creating a new word that speaks to Nigerians. I am looking forward to hearing conversations peppered with “Augment” eg: “Guy, how man pickin go do na? We just dey augment jare.”
