Anyone who is or has ever been married will tell you that marriage takes work. Heck, anybody older than 16 will tell you that dealing exclusively with one person for any length of time is hard work. Even if we were to remove stronger issues such as infidelity or violence, living successfully day-to-day as part of a couple takes grace.
This is why ‘irreconcilable differences’ is still the most quoted reasons for divorce. Your partner may not have cheated on you. S/he may still be a perfectly lovely person. But time and chance happen to you both and you just can’t keep the strands together anymore.
It is for this reason that Pastor Kemi Onadipe created the platform My Marriage Must Work – MMMW. A wife of fifteen years and a marriage counsellor, Pastor Onadipe has devoted herself to helping couples to restore their homes. There is no shame or judgement in walking away from a marriage. Sometimes, it just doesn’t work and that is enough of a reason to leave. Everyone deserves to be happy. But if you do keep the union together in love and happiness, then that should be celebrated too.
The main objective of this MMMW Annual Recognition Awards is to celebrate marriages and appreciate families. It is certainly clear that the organisers believe that God created the institution of marriage. And also that it was meant to be built to last. But there is no doubt that work is required by both parties to have a lasting relationship.
The organisers want to drive home the concept of couples working together on a daily basis to make their marriage work. But they also feel that this work deserves some recognition.
