Laolu Senbanjo meets his “ayanmo” as Nike hires him to create Air Max art in NY

For Nigerian visual artist and musician Laolu Senbanjo, getting to work with Nike is more than a dream come true, it seems like he stepped into his destiny.

When the American sportswear company selected him as a Master of Air – an honour which will see him create art-inspired Air Max at the Air Max Con 2016 – the Yoruba artist responded to the news by saying “I’m making my dreams a reality. This is my ayanmo. Create your destiny. Let me be your inspiration. Just do it!”.

Ayanmo is a Yoruba word which means destiny – something you were predestined to do, a gift which has been bestowed upon you and is truly yours.

Using his unique style called Afromysterics, a name he coined in 2006 to articulate “the mystery of the African thought pattern,” Laolu Senbanjo will draw inspiration from his Yoruba roots as well as his experiences from travel around the world to create art for the Air Max Day by Nike – an annual event created to celebrate the history of Air Max. His work will be incorporating his love for Air Max, New York City, and sports.

His work is bold, graphic and engaging. Laolu can be found:
