The audio for the song Up 2 Sumting – Iyanya ft. Don Jazzy & Dr Sid came out ages ago; hot on the heels of Mr Oreo signing with the Mavin crew. Snippets of the video told us to expect flash, wealth, and the visual confirmation that Mavin Music is the BAWSE record label in Nigeria, nay Africa!
Well, we certainly got that by the bucket-loads. There were aerial shots of mansions and 5* casinos. Cigars and Rolls Royces abound. The video is the epitome of polish and made men.
If I have any problems with this song at all, it would be with the song itself. The title says it is Iyanya’s song, but it certainly seems like it belongs to Don Jazzy. He is the opening singer, he dominates the video, his part is the most memorable of a largely forgettable song.
I guess what really troubles me about Mavin Music is the lack of an authentic voice. I get that they are Naija trying to bring the oyinbo flavour, but Dorobucci and Looku Looku are the last songs I heard that made me want to say “Oooooh, that’s my jaaam!”
And even those, I believe, are based on their choir credentials. When you put twelve people in a song, chances are, it will bang. The other songs and solo efforts though? I see it over and over again: fabulous, polished videos, massive marketing and noise, none of them songs on my phone.
That said, I know I am ALONE in my judgement of Mavin Music and this song: Up 2 Sumting. Mavin wouldn’t be where they are if people were not feeling their music. So me, I will shut up and leave you guy to enjoy the song!
