Viva Naija vs Michael Tubes on the Will Smith ‘Concussion’ Film. What’s Your Take?

That’s how I was just there minding my own business o, doing my Instagram jejely. Michael Tubes called me to say he didn’t agree with my Instagram post regarding Will Smith and his…shall we say, forced accent for the upcoming film Concussion.

My Instagram response to “Will Smith’s Nigerian Accent” wahala

For those who aren’t up to speed, here’s the tea: the recently released trailer for upcoming film ‘Concussion,’ which stars Will Smith as Nigerian-born forensic neuropathologist Dr Bennet Omalu is a controversial one on social media.

The trailer features Smith trying out the Nigerian accent, which has been described as ‘fake’ by some Nigerians on Twitter.

I felt like they could have found a Nigerian or at least an African actor to play this role, and while I’m pleased that a Nigerian’s story got told, I think we should still have the right to criticise the accent, and not just be grateful for every morsel that falls from the table of Hollywood.

Michael Tubes of Michael Tubes Creations maintains that there are many factors that go into determining who plays a role – not least of which is finance, and I’ll admit. He makes many strong points!

We recorded the call and made a YouTube video from our aproko. Tell us what you think!
